Kaufman
Glass Company offers the finest gauge glasses in the
industry, Macbeth, Klinger and Maxos brands. These glasses
are designed for maximum performance where equipment
life and efficiency depend on accurate liquid control
at all times. Our gauge glasses conform to all United
States government and military standards, in fact they
have set the industry standard with the tightest specs
for flatness and quality.
Our gauge
glass can be supplied plain, with standard gaskets
and mica shields or custom fabricated to your exact
specifications. They are available in three types:
- Type
A Plain
is designed for moderate pressure steam boilers
and for liquid level indicators.
- Type
A High Pressure
is designed to withstand pressures up to 5000 psi
- Type
B Reflex is designed for extra ease
in locating liquid levels. This gauge glass has
vertical prims extending the full viewing length
of the glass. The prism side faces the liquid. The
sections of the prisms covered with liquid do not
reflect light.
The sections
of the prisms not covered with liquid reflect light
brilliantly. Thus the liquid level stands out extra
clearly from a great distance away for easy viewing.
All
glasses are imprinted with glass type and date of
manufacture. High pressure glasses are labeled H.P.
All glasses are packaged in protective plastic sleeves
to guard against scratches and packed in color coded
boxes. Use and care information is available with
all glasses for ready reference.
GASKET
AND SHIELDS FOR FLAT GAUGE GLASS
Non-Asbestos
Gaskets are general purpose gaskets used for service
in hot water, mild acids, alkaline and inert gasses.
They are used up to a maximum temperature of 600°F
and maximum pressures up to 1200 PSI in non-steam
applications.
-
Grafoil GH-L Gaskets are flexible
graphite gaskets which are widely used in refineries,
petrochemical and power plants in high temperature
and high pressure applications. Dimensionally stable,
grafoil gaskets offer excellent sealing capabilities
under extreme conditions for longer equipment life
and less maintenance.
-Mica
Shields provide the best possible protection
to flat transparent, sight glasses in water and liquid
gauges and columns because they retain their basic strength
in high pressure, high temperature applications. They
provide perfect visibility for monitoring the nature
and degree of combustion in blast furnaces of steam
boilers.
Mica
Shields also protect the inner surfaces of transparent
glasses against the effects of erosion from chemical
abrasion and from the corrosive chemical effects of
alkaline solutions, boiler waters, caustics, hydrofluoric
acids, hot concentrated phosphoric acids, sodium and
potassium hydroxides and other contaminated viscous
or corrosive media. They provide an excellent sealing
strength against acid, steam, water, air and oil at
extreme pressures and temperatures and completely
eliminates the risk of cracks, breakage, jerks, shocks
and combustion effects. As a rule of thumb, Mica Shields
are a must where saturated steam pressure exceed 350
psi (up to 5689 psi) and working temperatures exceed
196°C (up to 600°C).
-
Kel-F Shields were originally developed
to withstand extreme temperature to 400°F and
to resist corrosive chemical attack. They are impervious
to moisture, have superior mechanical properties and
reasonable visual clarity. Kel-F Shields are widely
used in the chemical industry to protect the glass
surface in visual liquid level gauges from corrosive
attack.

Temperature and pressure ratings
recommended based on Corning's
test and experience with equipment
and conditions which insure adequate
flatness and resistance to deflection
of the gauge mounting under operating
pressures and temperatures. Gauge
manufacturers sometimes rate their
assemblies higher on the basis
of tests and experience with their
own particular assemblies. Corning
makes no representations as to
the suitability of such manufacturers'
ratings.
